Still life with Flowers

This first sketch of the flower is quite large to scale and it wouldn’t allow me to fit a whole image onto my a free page although answer the sort of size I would feel more comfortable creating this image with as it gives me more room to play with the details and quality

The second sketch is to scale for the size of the page. It was nice to be able to focus on the shape and lines. It gives me a reference to being able to create such a difficult flower into a painting. This sketch allows me to see the negative spaces between the leaves and flowers.

I created smaller flower sketches just so I can be able to see how the different Flowers fold and take up space also I am able to say the different shapes bunches of the Flowers create together

I attempted to test the colouring on this image on a white background as that’s where my Flowers have been sitting And I found it quite hard too fully be able to define Flowers and make them visible on a white background I then created a buff titanium background to allow me to focus on the flower shapes and patterns colouring I also noted down the colours that I would be using for the still life of Flowers.

I started making this painting by drawing in watered down paint. I painted the lines of where the leafs would be, following their individual shapes. I painted the yellow background early on which allowed me to focus on what I considered to be the most difficult part the flowers. I created this painting in layers starting with the white of the flowers. I spent time really trying to get to outline of each flower. This allowed me to really see where each petal changes colours and shows where leaves and flowers will overlap. I also painted the vase.

I then worked my way up tones by defining the flowers with the different pinks, I also added the browns into the stalks and vase pattern. I lastly worked on the leaves, following the layering method of firstly using one tone of green then I layered up tones on top of each other. The creates dimension and tone.

I would like to have another close focus in flowers, especially something that is very dainty and complex. I’m thinking this image would look better if i focused on a small section of the plant or used a much larger canvas so I can more accurately focus on the details.
